Background
Dalgaranga Cottage sits near the main Dalgaranga homestead which used to be part of an operating station until about 20 years ago when it was bought by DBCA. It is located approximately 570km NE of Perth (110km SW of Cue). It is now managed jointly by the Minangu Joint Management Board (JMB) and DBCA and is part of a National Park. Recent federal funding has opened the opportunity to now restore the area for environmental and public benefit. The initial phase of this is to rebuild the cottage in order to save the heritage and to be able to start creating a viable campground. The cottage then can be used by DBCA to help manage the area as well as future accommodation for related parties and / or the public. This will be followed by further projects that may include restoring the shearing quarters and main homestead as well as assisting DBCA in developing / restoring points of interest in the surrounding area. The aim is for Trackcare members to enjoy free camping into the future in return for our contributions in the various future restoration projects.
The old homestead has an appealing setting near the base of rock formations with wider points of interest including a meteorite crater, Walga Rock, Dalgaranga Hill, rock art, a dam built in the early 1900’s and other station remnants.
Scope
The main work for this trip is to clean up the cottage and surrounding areas of debris as well as to restore the roof and ceiling structure, repair the foundations of the building, rebuild verandas and restore some of the wall structures. Future trip(s) will then sheet the roof and install the ceilings and insulation.
Timing
Travel to site on Saturday 4th July and return on Monday 13th July. There will be at least one full day off for site seeing which may include guides from DBCA and or local elders.
