Dalgaranga Trip 2

Introduction

After a highly successful and very enjoyable 1st trip to Dalgaranga in early July with 26 volunteers a 2nd trip is

being planned in October (10th to 18th). The 1st trip undertook a substantial clean up of the old homestead cottage, roofing and wall structures were advanced, external original iron cladding was re-rolled and installed, foundations restored and new footings were established.  This 2nd trip includes completing the roof structures, installing the roof sheeting, installing ceiling and cladding with insulation, installing new water tanks. It is important that we try and complete this soon so that the good work that has been completed can be protected.

The location is caravan accessible and while temporary toilets and showers  will be made available by DBCA, volunteers should be fully self supported.

Background

The old Dalgaranga station is located about 570km NE of Perth (70km NE of Yalgoo). It was purchased by DBCA aproximately 25 years ago and made into a National Park. It is now overseen by the Minangu JMB comprising traditional owners and DBCA. DBCA manage the area on behalf of the Minangu JMB. Recent federal funding has enabled the DBCA to initiate projects here for public and environmental benefit. The first of such projects is the restoration of the oldest original remaining homestead cottage which was initially built in about 1915. The plan is to functionally restore this, whilst preserving as much of the heritage as practical, in order that it can be used by DBCA and Minangu personnel as an out camp for their improvement projects. These improvement projects are anticipated to include establishing a public camp site, restoring the main homestead (originally built around 1925), restoring the shearers quarters and restoring the degraded land areas over time. Trackcare is likely to be involved in some of these.
