Here is the long-anticipated programme for the Lake King/ South Coast Soiree.
Suitable for caravans and campers. Roads range from sealed to well-maintained gravel roads with a relatively short section of not so well-maintained gravel road but trafficable with caution. There is the possibility of very corrugated gravel roads in the Fitzgerald River National Park, but caravans will be in a campground.
What to Bring:
Please have a fully self-contained camping arrangement as two campsites do not have toilet facilities and site requirements do not permit even the discharge of grey water. A Porta Potti or cassette style toilet is acceptable and ample dump points are available and will be in the notes. If you cannot meet this requirement the alternative is to use the caravan park in Lake King.
Vehicles to be equipped with a vehicle-mounted 5-watt 80 channel UHF radio, Handheld UHF radio (preferably 5 watt) for walks away from the group, High Vis vest for each person
Enough supplies inc. medications for eight days or so, strong shoes/boots for walking, outdoor wear inc. rainwear, all sun protection, clothing etc for changeable spring weather, (hot, cold, wet, dry, sunny, overcast, may be cold at night or not……you get the picture. Binoculars may be useful. We hope so.
Cameras etc as for any other adventure.
Enough fuel for 500 km range.
Note no open fires in the wheatbelt from 1 October.

National Parks pass if you have one or it may be prudent to buy one online with the RAC (if you do not know about this give me a call.)
DAY 1
We meet at the Lakes BP Roadhouse, intersection Great Eastern and Great Southern Highways, The Lakes at 8.30am for a 9.00 am departure for York (47km). Please ensure your vehicle is fuelled for the day before we depart

Travel 10 km to Kokerbin Rock to explore the nature
reserve and the stone well. Points of interest the wave wall

Kwolyin is a former townsite and the Shire Of Bruce Rock
has provided the campground facilities (free of charge) on
the old football ground. There maybe orchids in and
around the campground
DAY 2
A leisurely start at about 9.30 am.

Through Shackleton with the smallest Bank
Explore Bruce Rock and the Agricultural Museum
Depart Bruce Rock 1045 to Merredin 49km

Cummins Theatre in Bates St, formerly the Tivoli Theatre in Coolgardie,

Meet at the Information Bay to the East of the town

DAY 3
Depart Karalee 0900 to Woolgangie (via Boondi Rock) 80 km

Depart Woolgangie 1100 to Coolgardie 59 km

Lunch and REFUEL, Coolgardie took King is the longest section without
opportunity to refuel (I suggest using the Caltex Service station)
Explore the town, look over Ben Prior Museum Park
A free dump point is located on Woodward Street
near the Coolgardie Railway Museum.

DAY 4
Depart Victoria Rock 0900 to McDermid Rock 111 km

note the Xanthorea Preissii. (a great exception to the oft excepted rule of “i before e except after c”.)
The road after crossing into the Shire of Dundas, deteriorates to “sometimes maintained” but is still easy to negotiate with caution especially anywhere water accumulates. In fairness, the Shire of Dundas appears to be rebuilding sections to a much higher standard while not looking after the parts to be rebuilt.

DAY 5

Depart Lake King 1330 to Mt Madden Rock 32 km

DAY 6
Depart Mt Madden 1300 to make our way to the present location of the Hatter Hill gold stamp battery in readiness for the publicity event.

Return two the Mt Madden Rock camp
DAY 7
Depart Mt Madden 0900 to Ravensthorpe 65 km

Assemble in the parking area near the roundabout at the East side of town
Depart Ravensthorpe 1030 to Hopetoun 50 km
Hopetoun has a dump point next to the road into town from Ravensthorpe near the caravan park
The program from here is subject to change and further planning as access to various areas of the National Park. I am still waiting on advice from the Ravensthorpe Shire about campsite availability.
Depart Hopetoun 1115 to Hamersley Inlet Campground 20Km
Toilet available but no discharge of grey water.
NOTE: Park entry fees are payable for the Fitzgerald River National Park.
Set up camp and unhook caravans.
Meet at 12 noon for a planning session to decide the program for the next 2 days principally to access whale watching locations or other places of interest.
DAYS 8 and 9
As per the outcome of the planning session on Day 7.
DAY 10
Pack up and make our independent way home.
