DESCRIPTION: TREES-ON-TRACKS (TOT) RAMBLE

The objective for this Episode is to go back over some of our earlier track opening work and to trim back some “pinch” sections of track to a more comfortable width.

There are a few areas of “Parrot Bush” thicket, but mostly it is reasonably sparse.

As our experience increases, mini-strategies are emerging: (a) get rid of those single bushes alongside/in the road space, and make sure to weed out the new ones underneath and either side, (b) do the same with EVERY dead (senescent) Parrot Bush removed – look at the one’s a bit back from the track too – if they fell, would they land on the track?

There may be new fallen trees (either on these tracks or elsewhere), which may require petrol chainsaws, so those who are Certificated Cross-Cut operators, please bring them.

The work is principally that of clipping, pruning, weeding new “parrot bush” growth and raking the roads clean. It is important to remove any Parrot Bush branches that are overhanging the roads – they drop lots of seeds as their propogation strategy; they take 5 years to mature, so weeding is a line of attack to halt their encroachment into the road space – and it’s very easy work in the gravelly soils they like to colonise.

Amongst the most useful equipment to bring are: secateurs, loppers, weeding/gardening gloves, sturdy rakes/hoes, cordless reciprocating saws and pruning saws.

(If considering buying cordless equipment, please note that the Club has standardised on the Makita range and has a significant Battery Charging capability, especially for Remote projects.)

At the end of the day’s work, we will visit Pony Rock to walk up it; see the damage that 4WD’s and Trail Bikes have caused, as well as Aboriginal marker stones and a Boorna Gnamma. Followed by a vist to the Mount Observation Lookout, for those interested.

Additional, and more detailed information will be provided to registered volunteers via email and SMS as the days go by. At any time, you may contact me if you have any questions.
