This is a trek through the South East of the State and near Lake King to look at unique water storage tanks, blasted into granite rock created in 1901 by workers on the very first section of the Number 1 Rabbit Proof Fence (RPF). View some rare (type 5B Flask) Pit Gnammas as well. The aim is to view some of the remaining 4 Tanks that need covering as a combined effort with other 4WD clubs interested in helping.
We will also visit the Hatters Hill gold mining area, hopefully with some descendants of people that worked the area. This is mainly a social trip with a bit of scope of work creation included. This trip also ties in the future project for Track Care to rebuild the Hatter’s Hill Battery.
There will be publicity photos taken so make sure you notify the Project Leader if you do NOT want your photo included. We will be joined by members of two other 4wd clubs that are looking to work with us on future projects. This means you will get to meet other people as well as bond with fellow Track Care members.
Trip Outline (remembering that it may flex a little depending on numbers and weather):
We will be leaving Perth on Sunday the 9th, camping that evening at Jilakin Rock / Kulin Bush Races Camp area (permission being sort). (Not sure of facilities).
On Monday March 10 we will head along “Tin Horse Highway”, to “Buckleys Breakaway”, Karlgarin, Hyden. Holt Rock (dropping in to see Strother’s shed “Holt Rock Hoedown”) (permission to sort). These three “Rock Tanks” we will see, is the whole point of the trip. To do a reconnaissance and view first hand the idea of restoring the remaining Tanks that need covering etc… Also to discuss how we do this and when….
The trip down to Mt Madden and the Ravensthorpe / Hopetoun addition was done because of interest by TCWA members to include other sights that Kevin P is familiar with, being an ex-local.
On Wednesday March 12, we will head to “Kukenarup Memorial” site, (possibly) a Look at “Cocanarup Station” (Ex Dunn Bros), Ravensthorpe Museum, “The Big House” (bought out from Germany for the mine manager, complete with croquet pitch). Most likely lead by Andrew Chapman, President Ravy Historical Society. Then Hopetoun to camp. 2 caravan parks to choose from, and a 48 hour RV stay..
On Thursday March 13, Kevin Penny will lead a trip to The Fitzgerald River National Park, taking in Barrens Beach, Barrens Lookout, Cave Point Lookout, Hamersley Sand Dunes, and Beach drive. “Dunns Cottage”. Return to Hopetoun and camp.
