Track Care WA members have been invited by the Friends of the Western Swamp Tortoise to help restore the habitat of the Western Swamp Tortoise in Ellen Brook Nature Reserve on Saturday 17 July from 10am. There are several thousand seedlings to plant to replace vegetation burnt in the recent fire.
The area is still black from the fire, so please wear old clothing and gum boots or old sneakers. Sometimes the ash is difficult to remove. Also, to minimise the workload for the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, we encourage planters to bring a fold up chair to sit on for morning tea. (Otherwise you will be sitting on the crushed limestone of the car park- not even any trees or logs worth mentioning to perch on!)
Chittering Landcare will be bringing the plants and equipment, and DBCA will have prepared the site to allow easy planting. There are no toilets on site, but 2 service stations are within a 2 minute drive. Parking is along Almeria Parade. Map attached. The red dot marks the entrance gate.
